The Rooney Rule at QMU
In order to support the University to increase diversity of staff members at all levels, the Race Equality Steering Group has approved adoption of the Rooney Rule into our recruitment and selection process for a trial period.

Adopting the Rooney Rule as a strategy for the recruitment and selection of staff is considered a form of positive action. As a UK employer, we can choose to use the positive action measures in the Equality Act 2010 to help people overcome certain barriers and improve representation in our workforce.
Positive action allows additional help to be provided for groups of people who share a ‘protected characteristic’ (for example, race, sex, or sexual orientation) in order to level the playing field. You can take proportionate action that aims to reduce disadvantage, meet different needs and increase participation.
How will the Rooney Rule be adopted by QMU?
For QMU, we will use the principles of the Rooney rule to maximise the number of applicants we interview from a minority ethnic background with the goal of increasing the number of staff we recruit from minority ethnic backgrounds.
Where an applicant from a minority ethnic background meets the essential criteria for the role advertised, they will be invited to interview. Applicants will be given the option to opt in and will be asked to confirm whether they wish to be considered under the Rooney Rule on the recruitment application form.
We recognise that adopting the Rooney Rule is only one initiative that has the potential to help us towards achieving our goal of a more diverse workforce. Alongside the adoption of the Rooney Rule as described above, we will continue our work in attracting and retaining staff from diverse backgrounds.
